Study on shear failure characteristics of red clay contaminated by heavy metals in the bauxite mining area in central Guizhou
We collected both heavy metal-contaminated red clay samples and non-contaminated red clay samples in the bauxite mining area in central Guizhou, and then conducted compaction and fast shear tests to analyze the compaction characteristics and shear strength of the red clay. The results show that heavy metal-contaminated red clay has a lower maximum dry density and higher optimal moisture content compared with the contrast soil. The in-crease of moisture content reduces the shear strength of the contaminated soil. The cohesion of the contaminated soil increases with the increase of moisture content, while the contrast soil shows a trend of first increase and then de-crease.The internal friction angle of both contaminated and contrast soil exhibits a decrease trend with the increase of moisture content. The contaminated soil experiences obvious shear stress changes during the shear process.
