Factors influencing social support in elderly patients with schizophrenia:a cross-sectional study of 144 inpatients in Guangzhou
Objective:To explore the influencing factors of social support in elderly schizophrenic inpatients.Methods:A total of 144 patients with schizophrenia admitted to Department of Geriatric Psychiatry in Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from February 2021 to December 2023 were recruited as the research objects by the continuous sampling method.The social support of the patients was investigated by the Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS),and the data included the basic information and treatment of the patients.Results:The total score of the Social Support Rating of 144 elderly patients with schizophrenia was 28.29±5.67.Univariate analysis showed that the influencing factors of social support of elderly patients with schizophrenia were the course of disease,marital status and the main caregivers(P<0.05).The multivariate linear regression results showed that the social support of elderly patients with schizophrenia was mainly related with the main caregiver(dependent on a caregiver)(β=2.836,95%CI:0.515‒5.158,P=0.017),marital status(no partner)(β=-2.725,95%CI:-4.627 to-0.824,P=0.005)and hostility and suspicion in the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale(β=-0.488,95%CI:-0.739 to-0.250,P<0.001).Conclusions:The social support was affected by dependent on a caregiver,partner,hostility and suspicion in mental and behavioral symptoms.
