Discussion on the Theoretical Connotation of"Turbidity Stagnating in Upper Orifices"Pathogenesis of Encephalopathy and Its Clinical Implication
The hypothesis of"turbidity stagnating in upper orifices"for pathogenesis of encephalopathy is proposed by Professor CAI Ye-Feng based on his years of clinical experience. This paper analyzed the conceptual connotation of"turbidity stagnating in upper orifices"and its evolution, and clarified the theoretical connotation of the hypothesis of"turbidity stagnating in upper orifices"by summarizing the experiences and doctrines of ancient medical practitioners. It is revealed that turbidity stagnation originally belongs to yin,and is apt to transform with other pathogens in etiological nature;turbidity stagnation usually affects the upper orifices in the pathogenic mechanism, and has the pathogenic characteristics of onset after an incubation period and being complicated and lingering. Therefore, the therapeutic principle of"eliminating turbidity stagnation, unblocking upper orifices"for encephalopathy has been put forward. The clinical implication of hypothesis of"turbidity stagnating in upper orifices"was illustrated in this paper by reviewing the modern experimental study and clinical trials of intervention of encephalopathy with traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),and its clinical application was also prospected. The hypothesis of"turbidity stagnating in upper orifices"for pathogenesis of encephalopathy is expected to promote the theoretical innovation for the TCM pathogenesis of encephalopathy, and will provide a direction for the modern clinical diagnosis and treatment of encephalopathy.
