Absorption of context,as a mechanism of semantic change,has been repeatedly mentioned in literature of Chinese language research in recent years.This paper argues that absorption of context is in essence a highly restricted and special semantic change,and there are very few qualified examples in Chinese.Therefore,absorption of context can only be a path or a result of semantic change,not a mechanism.Furthermore,this paper argues that absorption of context,like other processes of semantic change,also involves pragmatic inferencing(synchronic)and semanticization.
