Polyphonic Relations Between Negative Structures and Emphatic Expressions:A Comparative Study of Bing and Jue
Bing and Jue as negative polarity items(NPI)are commonly believed to intensify negation and emphasize tone, but they differ in approach and manner.Firstly, they play different roles in dialogue.Bing refutes expectations with"the reality",serving as a turning point from expectation to reality;jue denies the possibility and reasonableness of expectations without necessarily countering expectations.Secondly, semantic cues from negation and modal words all show their differences clearly:bing expresses realis scenarios, while jue represents irrealis situations. However,a substantial corpus demonstrates that both adverbs can be used in shared semantic expressions. We find that the fundamental distinction between bing and jue lies not in their inherent realism but in the projected narrative perspective.Bing not only syntactically excludes typical realis contexts but also brings about a narrative interpretation, whether true or not;jue, even when denying realis scenarios, holds an irrealis meaning.Lastly, they both reflect multidimensional perspectives beyond a binary interaction, indicating the process of coordinating different viewpoints and evaluating participants'psychological states, which is the source and nature of polyphony.
