A Cross-dialectal Comparison of Resumption-indicating"V Guo":Starting with Guo3 Expressing Updating in Nanchang Dialect
Through re-examining the grammatical meaning of resumption aspect, this paper demonstrates that guo3 in Nanchang dialect emphasizes the purpose of resumption, which lies in the complete or single replacement of the attributes."V guo"in Nanchang dialect tends strongly to be followed by"yi+classifier",and can co-occur with cou, which expresses aggravated resumption.Through cross-dialectal comparison, the following parameters of a resumption structure are obtained:premise(non-)ideal,pre-collocation of synonymic adverbs,post-collocation of aspect markers, and combination of quantitative components.Guo3 originated from guo02"meaning"from beginning to end".If the rational connection in pragmatic reasoning triggers resumption in a sequential context,it is guo4 meaning"alteration".Inspired by the Mandarin sentence Chongxin lai guo and the changes in Beijing dialect, the basic style of resumption aspect is a combination of a verb and guo3,and the"adverb+V guo"is a frame structure emerged later.
