Irony,an early key concept of German romantic thought, contains a metaphysical view that is different from Fichte's idealist intellectual philosophy and Hegel's absolute idealism philosophy. The early German Romantic advocated the use of fragmentary irony, through the infinite negation and infinite generation without closed endings,to get rid of the shackles of finite reality, and to sense metaphysical absolute indirectly. But this absolute itself cannot be grasped by the subject,it can only function as a regulatory concept. At the same time, the subject also realized in irony that he/she was in a state of contradiction between special and universal, limited and infinite. In line with this, romantic irony works often express their infinity with a superficial self-denial,chaos or fragmentation, and require the author to maintain a distance from art, pursue a form of self-reflective art.Irony embodies the poetic philosophical style of the early German Romanticism, which is different from the classical German philosophy. The early German Romantics tried to use art, aesthetics and intuition to supplement the shortcomings of philosophical reflection in bridging the contradiction between subjective and objective and reaching infinity.
