The Analysis of Dual Narrative Process in Book I of Spencer's The Faerie Queene
Edmund Spencer's The Faerie Queene is a famous long narrative epic of the English Renaissance period. In this paper, the author uses Professor Shen Dan's dual narrative process and covert progression theory to analyze Book I of The Faerie Queene.Research has found that there are two parallel narrative undercurrents in Book I of Spencer's The Faerie Queene:one is the narrative process with Una as the main narrative thread, and the other is the narrative line with the Redcross Knight as the main character. In these two narrative processes, the narrative process dominated by Una is the"covert progression"of the work, while the narrative process dominated by the Redcross Knight is the explicit plot of the work. The explicit plot and the"covert progression"complement each other, making Spencer's thematic significance in the Book I of The Faerie Queene more apparent.
