An Analysis of the Relationship between Gao Qi's Fear of Entering the Officialdom and His Life Tragedy
Gao Qi developed a fear of officialdom due to his early experience of serving as an official during the period when Zhang Shicheng controlled the Wu region. This psychological disposition determined his attitude towards career choices and ultimately led him to choose a return to the countryside. After entering the Ming Dynasty,Gao Qi accepted Zhu Yuanzhang's summons but resigned from his position and chose not to serve as an official, which was directly related to his fear of officialdom. There was an obvious conflict be-tween Gao Qi's act of defending the recluse and Zhu Yuanzhang's attitude towards the scholars,so he was implicated in the Wei Guan case and sentenced to death. This result seems to be fateful, but if we take into account Zhu Yuanzhang's attitude towards scholars who chose not to serve as officials at that time,it implies a certain inevitability. The killing of Gao Qi marked the end of an era in which a generation of scholars had the freedom to choose their own way of life.
