The impact of foreign direct investment on working hours and its mechanism were studied based on the foreign investment inflow data of the Chinese business registration database and the working hour data of the Chinese household tracking survey database.The result showed that the foreign direct investment significantly extended the weekly working hours of without significant impact on workers'overtime,which was robust under the control of endogeneity and different measures.The mechanism of foreign direct investment on working hours was analyzed from perspectives of employment effect and income effect,and the result showed that foreign direct investment extended the scale of employment and working hours through employment effect,and increased the opportunity cost of workers'leisure time through income effect,which forced workers to work overtime.
