Effects of chitosan on physiological metabolism and fruit quality of melon
To investigate the impact of chitosan on the growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism mechanism, and fruit quality of melons, melon'Nongda 103'was used as the test material.Four treatments were set up as water control, and chitosan treatments at the concentration of 400,800,1 200 and 1 600 mg/L.Analysis was performed on plant growth, photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic parameters, physiological indicators of nitrogen metabolism and fruit quality.Correlation analysis was conducted between individual fruit weight and various physiological parameters. The results showed that all treatments significantly increased melon plant height, stem thickness, leaf area, chlorophyll a,chlorophyll b,total chlorophyll, carotenoids content and photosynthetic parameters.Increases were found in nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen content of leaves, nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase activities, augmented individual fruit weight, fruit shape index, soluble solids content, and soluble sugar content. While fruit firmness and titratable acidity declined. We found that T2 was the best treatment that significantly increased the single fruit weight and soluble sugar by 16.54%and 57.47%compared with the control.Correlation analysis showed that leaf area had the most remarkable effect on single fruit weight. In conclusion, foliar spraying of appropriate concentration of chitosan was conducive to promote the growth of melon plants, enhance photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism, increase the weight of single fruit, and improve fruit quality. The best effect was achieved with 800 mg/L chitosan.
