Determination of the Upstream Inundation Area of Sediment Retaining Dams in Pumped Storage Power Stations in Northwest China
Considering the high sediment content in rivers in northwest China and the layout of the sediment retaining dams in the lower reservoirs of pumped storage power stations, the flow characteristics of the river section within the up-stream inundation area of the dams are analyzed. Then, the river section is divided into the upper and lower sections based on the transverse section at the entrance of the flood and sediment discharge tunnel, and the inundation areas are calculated separately. The lower section between the sediment retaining dam and the flood and sediment discharge tunnel entrance is simplified as a flat reservoir. The inundation area is determined by the return water level at the tunnel en-trance based on the design flood of different submerged objects. For the upper section before the tunnel entrance, the in-undation area is determined by calculating the return water level. The proposed method can be useful reference for the determination of inundation areas of reservoirs in other pumped storage power stations.
