Therapeutic effect of magnolol on experimental periodontitis in rats
Objective To study the therapeutic effect of magnolol on experimental periodontitis in rats. Methods Fifty 3-month-old male SD rats were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups:control group(Group A),experimental peri-odontitis group(Group B1),local treatment group(Group B2),experimental periodontitis treatment group(Group B3),and local treatment with magnolol(Group B4),with 10 rats in each group. An experimental periodontitis model was established by ligating the maxillary first molar with steel wire. After 4 weeks of establishment, the model was treated according to the corre-sponding groups for 8 weeks.Oral examination was conducted, and rats were sacrificed by bleeding from the femoral artery.Peri-odontal tissue slices were made, and changes in periodontal tissue were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining.The ex-pression of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and matrix metalloproteinase-8(MMP-8)in periodontal tissue were detected by immunohistochemistry. Results The combination of magnolol and local periodontal treatment can significantly improve the damage of periodontal tissue and levels of TNF-α and matrix MMP-8,with a good therapeutic effect on experimental periodon-titis in rats. Conclusion Magnolia officinalis has a significant therapeutic effect on experimental periodontitis, and it can signifi-cantly reduce inflammatory cytokines in periodontal tissue, promote periodontal disease healing, and alveolar bone regeneration.
