Effectiveness and safety of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of primary insomnia
Objective To detect the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine(CHM)in the treatment of primary insomnia(PI).Methods Seventy-two PI patients were randomized 1:1 to acupuncture treatment(control group)or acupuncture treatment+CHM(study group)for 4 weeks. The sleep awakening time, total sleep time, and sleep efficiency parameters were recorded.Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was performed to detect serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)and5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT).The Insomnia Severity Index(ISI)score and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)score were evaluated, and the incidence of adverse reactions was compared between groups after treatment. Results After treatment, patients of the both groups presented significantly decreased sleep awakening time, and increased total sleep time and sleep efficiency parameters than those before treatment(P<0.05).The study group was superior to the control group for the above indexes(P<0.05).After treatment, patients of the both groups presented significantly higher BDNF and 5-HT serum levels than those before treatment, and the increases were more pronounced in the study group relative to the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, patients of the both groups presented significantly lower ISI and PSQI scores, and the decreases were more common in the study group compared to the control group(P<0.05).The incidence of adverse re-actions was significantly lower in the study group than in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Acupuncture combined with CHM in the treatment of PI can significantly reduce the patient's sleep awakening time, increase total sleep time, improve sleep efficiency, and increase BDNF and 5-HT serum levels,Thus, which is canpale improving insomnia symptoms and increasing treatment safety, with a worthy of clinical promotion.
