Curative effect of five-element acupuncture in the treatment of primary insomnia and its influence on immune function and neurotransmitter
Objective To explore the effect of five-element acupuncture on primary insomnia(PI)and its influence on immune function and neurotransmitters. Methods A total of 92 PI patients were randomly assigned into treatment group(n=46)and control group(n=46).All patients were managed by estazolam tablets, and those in treatment group were additionally treated with five-element acupuncture.Treated for 4 weeks, the aim was to compare clinical effect,Athens Insomnia Scale(AIS)score on day 0,and at weeks 2 and 4,gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA),5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT),tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α),nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB),monocyte count, lymphocyte count, white blood cell(WBC)count,CD4+/CD8+.The curative effect was assessed. Results The overall effective rate in the treatment group was better than that in the control group(Z=2.030,P<0.05).AIS scores at weeks2 and4 in the both groups were significantly lower than those before treatment(P<0.05),which in the treatment group were significantly lower than those of the control group(P<0.05).AIS scores at week 4 in the both groups were significantly lower than those at week 2(P<0.05).After treatment, significantly increased 5-HT and GABA,and significantly decreased TNF-α and NF-κB were found in the both groups than those before treatment(all P<0.05),and the different was significant between groups for the above indexes(all P<0.05).After treatment, significantly decreased counts of monocyte, lymphocyte and WBC,and significantly increased level of CD4+/CD8+were detected in the both groups than those before treatment(all P<0.05),and the different was significant between groups for the above indexes(all P<0.05).Conclusion Five-element acupuncture has good clinical efficacy in PI patients, which can effectively improve insomnia symptoms, enhance immune function, and improve neurotransmitters.
