Preparation and antioxidant properties of boron carbide modified polyphenylene sulfide staple fibers
Using fiber-grade polyphenylene sulfide(PPS)resin and nanoscale boron carbide as raw materials, boron carbide modified PPS staple fibers were prepared by blend melt spinning of PPS and nanoscale boron carbide subjected to surface treat-ment with silane coupling agent. And the modified PPS staple fibers were oxidized using concentrated sulfuric acid. The effects of nanoscale boron carbide content and silane coupling agent content on the antioxidant properties of modified PPS staple fibers were studied, and its antioxidant mechanism was explored. The results showed that the strength retention rate of modified PPS staple fibers exposed to concentrated sulfuric acid treatment showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of boron carbide content and silane coupling agent content;the modified PPS staple fibers had good antioxidant properties when the mass fractions of silane coupling agent(based on boron carbide)and boron carbide(based on PPS)were 0.7%and 1.2%,re-spectively,and the strength retention rate of the fibers reached 94.7%after concentrated sulfuric acid treatment, with a growth of 11.5%compared with that(84.9%)of unmodified PPS staple fibers treated with concentrated sulfuric acid;and the antioxidant mechanism of boron carbide modified PPS staple fibers was mainly that the boron carbide itself had good antioxidant properties and the dispersion and coupling effects of silane coupling agents also helped to improve the antioxidant properties of PPS short fibers.
