The Role of Government in Changing Existing Customs and Traditions:Reflections on the Narrative Framework of"Bifurcated History"
As an important category of social governance, changing existing customs and traditions, because of its unavoidable complexity, often leads to fierce debates on the role of government customs in the academic world. In the current debate, although the two factions of scholars who adhere to be-ing"state-centered"and"society-centered"have shown tit-for-tat verbal positions, they both belong to the"rigor of narrow construction"in terms of expression, not only generalizing the noisy reality of real life, but also concealing a large number of historical realities that are not compatible with their own views. In order to explore the more authentic historical limitations and evolutionary logic of the role of government customs, the narrative structure of"bifurcated history"is proposed, combined with the dual-layered characteristics contained in the traditional Chinese social and political structure and the concept of"customs".Starting from the two historical contexts of the top-down"national per-spective"and the"local perspective"of regional differences,it makes a more complete review of the history of changing existing customs and traditions. It is found that in the narration of"bifurcated his-tory",the debate on the role of government customs only exists in the"local perspective",while in the"national perspective","state-centeredness"has always been a profound political tradition, and e-ven in the"local perspective","state-centeredness"and"society-centeredness"do not show a game re-lationship,instead,they demonstrate a coexistence relationship with different scopes of application, which reflects that custom governance,as a"great tradition"created by political elites, tends to be one-dimensional cultural adjustment.
