On the Issue of Imitation in Adorno's Artistic Thought
The relationship between art and imitation is a fundamental issue under continuous discus-sion and exploration in literary theory. On the issue of the relationship between art and reality, there have always been two opposing views of"reproduction"and"representation".Generally speaking, people tend to regard"reproduction"as an imitation of reality, and"representation"as an expression of emotion, and thus"reproduction"and"representation"have become two opposing creative con-cepts.Adorno also discusses this issue in his book Aesthetic Theory. He believes that the issue of the relationship between art and imitation has not been well resolved, and there is still no satisfactory an-swer to the issue of why something is imitated in art,and why something is described as true but actu-ally false,or at best,it is just a distortion of reality.Although many issues of imitation are still con-troversial,Adorno still admits that imitation is a constituent element of a work of art,and that differ-ent art media also achieve identity according to the law of imitation. Therefore,it is equally wrong to reject the thought of imitation from aesthetics or to accept it without discrimination in history. The relationship between art and imitation should be examined dialectically in the categories of witchcraft, illusion and reason,so as to dispel the riddle characteristics of art.
