Chinese society,represented by agricultural civilization,presents a typical localism.Pearl Buck s The Good Earth and Tai Jingnong's The Son of the Earth both focus on the rural area,vividly reproduce the"Rural China"in the early 20'b century in terms of folk customs,peasant images and so-cial attitudes.The rural life in The Good Earth is full of vitality and energy,while the rural world de-picted in The Son of the Earth is full of sadness and grief.The difference in cultural identities has re-sulted in the two authors'different writings on"Rural China",which reflect divergent cultural value orientations in terms of their creative perspectives,emotional attitudes towards the peasants and forms of expression.
