Analysis and Comparison between Different Field Partial Discharge Test Methods of AC Ultra High Voltage (UHV) Main Transformers
Field partial discharge tests are demanded for large power transformers, both before operation and after overhaul. As a major test of the insulation system, field partial discharge test is known to be of high technical difficulty and to have a high requirement upon environment.Such requirement is even higher when it comes to tests of 1O00kV AC UHV main transformers, for their high voltage level, large capacities and complicated distributed capacitances. Two of the commonly adopted field partial discharge methods are discussed in this paper,i.e.,the intermediate frequency brushless synchronous generator method and the variable-frequency power source method.Characteristics of the field methods due to their respective technical principles are described.Test principles and equipment characteristics are analysed.Strong points and weaknesses of the test methods are summarized through comparison.
