Electromagnetic Characteristics Simulation of a Novel Converter Transformer Based on Coupled Field-Circuit Method
Because the new-type converter transformer has a special winding connecting scheme, its electromagnetic characteristics directly influence the electromagnetic parameters' design and system operation. In this paper, the field-circuit coupling mathematic models for the new-type converter transformer are established based on the field-circuit coupling method and the corresponding finite element simulation models are established based on the actual data for a prototype of the new-type converter transformer. Moreover, the simulations were conducted about the new-type converter transformer work in different operation conditions with-/without filter in the valve side. The two operation conditions were compared in terms of the grid-side current, the induced electromotive force, excitation current and magnetic flux in the core.As the results show, firstly, the harmonic content in grid-side current greatly decreases; secondly, the distortion of the induced electromotive force reduces ; thirdly, the waveform of the excitation current and magnetic flux approximates sine wave. The electromagnetic characteristics of the new type converter transformer have significant improvement when compared to traditional converter transformer, conducive to eliminating the harmonic adverse impact.
