Population Aging,Digital Economy,and Performance of Labor-Intensive Manufacturing
Based on micro-level enterprise data of the labor-intensive manufacturing and city data from China from 2011 to 2022,this article evaluates the impact of population aging and digital economy on the performance of the labor-intensive manufacturing,as well as the underlying mechanism.According to the research findings, the population aging hinders the improvement of performance of the labor-intensive manufacturing, while the digital economy has the opposite effect, that is,promoting effect. The combined effect of these two factors ultimately has a positive impact on the performance of the labor-intensive manufacturing. The heterogeneity test results indicate that this combined effect exhibits significant regional heterogeneity, urbanization level heterogeneity, and urban vitality heterogeneity. The mechanism examination reveals that the combined effect of population aging and digital economy primarily enhances the performance of the labor-intensive manufacturing by improving workers' skills and digital technology levels of the labor-intensive manufacturing.
