Stereotypical Perceptions and Imagination of the Elderly Among College Students——A Painting Analysis Based on the Media Literacy Course
Young people are an important force in holding the power of discourse and shaping the public im-age of the elderly. The study invited 103 college students to present their perceived and imagined elderly groups through paintings. The analysis of paintings and participants'responses revealed that the image of elderly groups includes four aspects:benevolent elderly, declining physical function, loneliness and eager for contact, and laggards in media use.The lack of direct contact and the single role model of media are possible factors for this perception.A good communication ecology is the key to eliminate the uncertainty of"old"and create a social environment that respects and is suitable for the elderly.
