A Cognitive Grammar Analysis of the Rationale for Transliteration in Second-hand Proper Nouns
Unlike other proper nouns,second-hand proper nouns can only be transliterated.The article takes the symbolic view of cognitive grammar as the theoretical framework,and by explaining the grammatical valence relationship of second-hand proper nouns at the phonemic and semantic levels,it analyzes the cognitive motivation for the application of transliteration principles to second-hand proper nouns.Research has found that:(1)the language features of second-hand proper nouns are part of speech and semantic mixing;(2)in the symbolic relationship between sound and meaning,second-hand proprietary nouns lack one integration and two synthesis core links,resulting in semantic reduction while highlighting phonetics;(3)the conflict between the meaning and pronunciation of Chinese and loanwords is the deep root of the transliteration of second-hand proprietary nouns.Research has shown that the concept of phonetic symbolism can provide a more reasonable cognitive motivation explanation for the transliteration of second-hand proper nouns.
