The Dystopian Nostalgic Constructions in"A Rose for Emily"in Light of the Cognitive Schema
Regarding Emily, the protagonist in"A Rose for Emily",as a living individual in a"possible world",in light of the cognitive schema theory of nostalgia,it is analyzed the trigger mechanism of Emily's nostalgia complex, her strategies and results of nostalgic constructions.Modernity and the misfortune of the original family lead to the crisis of a sense of belonging,Emily symbolically compensates for her sense of belonging in reality by constructing an idealized spiritual home,an idealized social bond, the idealized nostalgic self and alternative meanings.Because of her suffering from avoidant personality disorder and mental illness, having a fragile state in reality,as well as lacking of the capital to game with the society, the spiritual home and bond relationship she constructs tend to be dystopian, which cannot be close to reality,so the efficiency is relatively low.Meanwhile,it reflects her helplessness and sadness of compromising to reality.
