On Untranslatability and Countermeasures Against It——Based on the English Translation of"Fortress Besieged"
Untranslatability has long been a theoretical concern in the translation field,and an in-depth study of the issue can help promote the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures.Research on the phenomena of untranslatability or the limit of translatability in translation has primarily been conducted from the perspectives of language,culture,and style so far,but rarely from specific cases of Chinese to English translation practice.On the basis of John Catford's classification of untranslatability,the English translation of Fortress Besieged is used as an example to discuss the connotation and classification of untranslatability,and to propose specific translation countermeasures such as idiomatic translation and paraphrasing,so as to break through the difficulties in translating Chinese literature and help Chinese culture go global.
