The Study of Teaching Lexical Inferencing Strategies in English Reading
The strategy of inferring word meanings is a crucial method in the process of indirect or incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading. The article examined the direct instruction of lexical inferencing strategies to explore its impact on second language learners'lexical inferencing. The study selected 75 first-year undergraduate students majoring in English as experimental subjects and divided them into a control group and an experimental group.Relevant teaching on the experimental group was conducted;lexical inferencing was compared between the experimental group and the control group,as well as within the experimental group. The results showed that:(1)the mean of lexical inferencing in the experimental group after teaching intervention was significantly higher than that in the control group;(2)the mean of lexical inferencing of the experimental group after teaching intervention was significantly higher than the mean before intervention. The results indicate the direct instruction of lexical inferencing strategies can help improve college English learners'ability of inferring word meanings in reading.
