Hilary Putnam on the Uniqueness of American Pragmatism
When the native American pragmatism approaches into the 21st century, some scholars in the philosophical field believes that pragmatism,as an outdated and short-lived philosophical trend one hundred years ago, cannot play a significant role in contemporary philosophy.Hilary Putnam, who firmly opposed this, thus wrote two papers successively, namely"The Uniqueness of Pragmatism"and"What Makes Pragmatism So Different?"He compared American pragmatism with three major European philosophical schools,as to highlight the uniqueness of pragmatism and its necessity of existence within the framework of the metaphysical tradition.Putnam's neo-pragmatism not only reflects the elements of analytical philosophy, but also shows the obvious differences from the mainstream ideas of European philosophy. The pragmatist position in his later philosophy is about our daily life based on experience.
