A Study of the Marginal Figures in Caryl Phillips'"A Distant Shore"
Caryl Phillips is a British writer from the Caribbean, whose works often focus on the experiences of black diaspora. The novel"A Distant Shore"tells the difficult journey and experiences of Gabriel, who is forced to flee to England from a war-torn country in Africa,as well as the life journey of another retired British female teacher,Dorothy. These two people, who were originally unrelated, came to live in a small town in the north of England to escape their marginalized position in society. They became friends because of their shared marginalized status and loneliness.Phillips not only showcases the deep hostility and blatant racial discrimination of British locals towards black diaspora in"A Distant Shore",but also criticizes the oppression of women in British society through Dorothy's life experience.
