Relationship between smoking intensity and hypertension, diabetes melli-tus among adult residents in Henan Province
Aim:To investigate the intensity of smoking and its association with the prevalence of hypertension and dia-betes in adult residents of Henan Province. Methods:Applying the data of family health questionnaire,a part of the Sixth National Health Service Survey in Henan Province in 2018,23 163 adult residents aged 18 years and above in Henan Prov-ince were selected as survey respondents using multi-stage whole cluster random sampling.Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between smoking intensity and hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Results:Among 23 163 adult residents in Henan Province in 2018,77.66%were never smokers,6.23%were light smokers,5.05%were moderate smokers, and 11.06%were heavy smokers.Logistic regression analysis showed that compared to never smokers after adjus-ting for gender, age, education, alcohol consumption, overweight and obesity, light smokers had a higher risk of hypertension(OR =1.407,95%CI:1.247-1.587)and diabetes(OR =1.233,95%CI:1.013-1.499),moderate smokers had a high-er risk of hypertension(OR =1.374,95%CI:1.112-1.698),and heavy smokers had a higher risk of hypertension(OR = 1.344,95%CI:1.113-1.623).Conclusions:Smoking intensity is a risk factor for the development of hypertension and diabetes in the adult residents in Henan Province.
