Postconditioning with sevoflurane improves long-term neurological out-comes after focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats
Aim:To investigate the long-term effect of postconditioning with sevoflurane in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods:Male rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups, rats in model group and sevoflurane group were subjected to suffer transient middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)for 90 min and rats in the sham group were sub-jected to the same surgery procedures except for occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 90 min.Afterward, they were ex-posed to 1.0 MAC sevoflurane,O2,or 1.0 MAC sevoflurane for 30 min at the beginning of reperfusion. The neurological def-icit scores were evaluated from the 1st day to the 29th day after reperfusion every 48 hours(25 in each group).Infarct vol-ume was evaluated on the 29th day after reperfusion by TTC staining(6 rats in each group).Brain water content was evalua-ted at 24 hours after reperfusion(3 rats in each group). Results:Infarct volume of sevoflurane group[(38.9±5.9)]%was less than that[(46.8±5.5)%]of model group on the29th day(P<0.05).Neurological deficit scores of sevoflurane group on the 1st day and 13th day were(1.25±0.44)and(0.63±0.59),both lower than those[(2.00±0.72)and(1.25±0.44)]of model group(P<0.05).Brain water content of sevoflurane group[(80.5±1.0)%]was lower than that[(84.0±0.8)%]of model group(P<0.05).Conclusion:Postconditioning with sevoflurane could improve early neurological function after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in adult rats.
