Combination of jaw pads with invisible aligner in correction of second molar scissor bite
Aim:To compare the efficacy of jaw pads with invisible aligner or invisible aligner alone in correction of second molar scissor bite. Methods:Thirty patients(16 females and 14 males)with moderate and severe scissor bite of the bilateral second molar were selected. The age ranged from 16.5 to 28 years. The patients were allocated into 2 groups,con-trol group(n =5)was treated by invisible aligners, and in the combination group(n =25),scissor bite was first released by wearing jaw pads and cross elastics, and then by invisible aligners. The treatment efficacy was compared. Results:The treat-ment was successfully completed in the combination group, with an average time of 18 months, among which, the time to re-lease the scissor bite using jaw pads plus elastic traction was 1.5 to 3 months. However, all patients in control group failed to complete the treatment;after wearing about 10 pairs of appliances, the condom was still easily removed;the treatment was suspended, the program was restarted, and the lock was released after about 10 pairs of appliances, and the time spent was 14-15 months;the wasted time was about 12 months compared with the combination group. Conclusion:For patients with moderate and severe scissor bite of the second molars, applying the jaw pad and cross elastics before the invisible aligner could successfully accomplish the treatment program and shorten the treatment time.
