Discussion on the Insufficient Yellow River Water Diversion in Henan A Case Study of Sanyizhai Irrigation District
The current Yellow River water diversion is insufficient in Henan. In the paper, taking Sanyizhai Irrigation District as an example, based on the daily data from 2019 to 2023,the Yellow River inflow and the water diversion of Sanyizhai Irrigation District are analyzed, and the causes of insufficient Yellow River water diversion in recent years are discussed. The results indicate that the average annual discharge at Jiahetan Hydrological Statio was decreasing from 2019 to 2023 with a decreasing rate of-144.99 m3/s per year. The water level at the same flow discharge changed slightly, and the riverbed down-cutting and aggradation were not obvious. The number of days with flow<1 000 m3/s in the Yellow River has increased significantly, while the number of days with flow≥1 000 m3/s has decreased significantly. The annual water diversion of the head gate has the trend of decreasing on the whole, with a decreasing range of-25.844 million m3/a.The number of days of lifting water at the canal head increased year by year, and the number of days of lifting water in 2023 increased by 163 days compared with that in 2019.The gravity water diversion at the canal head decreased year by year, and the annual gravity water diversion decreased by-62,702,000 m3/a.The annual lifting water at the canal head increased by 36.858 million m3/a.The decrease of Yellow River water diversion in the period of 2019-2023 is mainly caused by the decrease of Yellow River inflow.Because of the decrease of gravity water diversion, the high cost of lifting water for irrigation, the motivation of Yellow River water diversion is frustrated, which resulted in continuous overdrawing of groundwater.
