Ge Hong's personality as both Taoist and Confucian is particularly prominent in his book Bao Pu Zi,but throughout his life, the Taoist philosophy of avoiding harm as a hermit holds a domi-nant position in his spiritual realm. He systematically discussed the problems related to seclusion and politics, and cleared up the gap between the two with ideas as"the same origin","assisting teaching with writing books","depending on the time to choose to be nameless or prominent"and"seeking the Tao and cultivating immortality".However, the contradiction between taking up an official post and be-ing a hermit has never been really solved, which stems from the difficulties of times and the confusion of physical and mental struggle.Ge Hong's physical and mental resolution with a calm and peaceful life is also helpless.
