On the"Great Loss of Jie"from the Perspective of Neo-Confucianism
Examining Cheng Yi's remarks in the Testament of Cheng Shi in Henan,it can be inferred that Cheng Yi was not opposed to women's remarrying. The direct reason for the misunderstanding of Cheng Yi on this issue by contemporary scholars lies in their interpretation of the word"Jie"as"chas-tity".According to the use of the character"Jie"in ancient books, interpreting"Jie"as"chastity"does not conform to its implied meanings in traditional Chinese ancient classics.Through analyzing the connotation of the word"Jie"in Cheng Yi's quotations,it is found that when"Jie"refers to peo-ple's character and integrity,it has two meanings. In terms of behavior,it is the external behavior that conforms to the norms of propriety, while in terms of righteousness,it refers to the fact that inner moral-ity meets the requirements of the"Tao"in a certain aspect.Considering Cheng Yi's concept of mar-riage that regards"family morality"as the purpose of marriage,it can be concluded that Cheng Yi's"great loss of Jie"emphasizes not women's chastity, but"family morality".
