On the English Translation of Chen Yan's Xijing Trilogy in the View of Translator Behaviour Criticism
Chen Yan's Xijing Trilogy has greatly influenced the development of modern Chinese dra-matic literature, and the release of its English translation will help promote Chinese literature and cul-ture to"go global".Taking the Xijing Trilogy and its English translation as the research objects, the translators'behavior at the levels of the discourse structure and linguistic expressions within the trans-lated text was analyzed by utilizing the intra-translation and extra-translation divisions as well as the"truth-seeking"-"utility-attaining"continuum evaluation model within the framework of Translator Behaviour Criticism. It is discovered that"truth-seeking is superior to utility-attaining"in terms of the discourse structure;while"truth-seeking is balanced with utility-attaining"in general in terms of linguistic expressions, such as the English translation of rhetorical devices, proverbs and dialects. Then the subjective and objective factors beyond the translated text affecting translators'behaviour are delved into, and it is found that the type of the original text, the reader's factor and translators'own translation thoughts all exert influence on the appearance of the translated text. The research also reflects the translator's dual identities of language and social natures.
