Research on Explosion Area Calculation of Liquid Sulfur Tank by Using NFPA68
The liquid sulfur tank is an essential equipment for storing liquid sulfur product in sulfur plants. It collects liquid sulfur that has been cooled by coolers at all levels of the sulfur plant and sulfur-sealed.The H2S concentration in the liquid sulfur usually reaches~300 pg/g,in order to reduce the concentration of H2S gas, liquid sulfur degassing technology will be used to remove H2S gas from liquid sulfur, reducing its H2S concentration to 10 pg/g.Therefore,the liquid sulfur tank is divided into two areas:the liquid sulfur degassing area and the product area. The liquid sulfur is degassed by the degassing facility and overflows to the product area, which is then pumped out by the liquid sulfur lifting pump.Due to the presence of H2S in the liquid sulfur tank,a large amount of H2S gas may accumulate in the gas phase space, leading to the occurrence of flash explosions. How to avoid the harm and risks caused by explosions, the first step is to ensure the normal operation of the degassing facilities, and the ultimate protection method is to use the explosion vent to release the pressure generated by the explosion.Currently, there is no literature to explore how to calculate the explosion vent. This paper takes the liquid sulfur tank of a sulfur recovery unit in the Middle East as an example to explore how to use the NFPA68-2018 explosion pressure relief guide to calculate the explosion area of the liquid sulfur tank, which has reference significance for the design of explosion vent in domestic sulfur tanks.
