Evolution of Chinese Goal-oriented Structures and the Typicality Issue Concerning the Particle"Qijian(起见)"
The structure"Wei X Qijian"represents a relatively unique goal-oriented structure in Chinese,characterized by its uncommon marking type.This article posits that"Wei X Qijian"originates from the prepositional phrase structure"preposition X Qijian"and emerged following the specialization of the goal marker"Wei(为)".The grammaticalization source for"Qijian"is traced back to verb-object phrases,with its semantic roots influenced by Buddhist language.In contrast to prevailing scholarly perspectives,this study proposes a dual-line integration model for understanding both semantic evolution and grammaticalization pathways associated with"Qijian",thereby addressing certain limitations found in existing research.Rather than focusing solely on the semantic abstraction of"Qijian",this article investigates its typicality issues regarding grammatical function through an analysis encompassing semantics,properties of X,and syntactic characteristics across diverse contextual distributions.In contemporary Chinese usage,structures formed as"Wei(Weile)X"dominate as goal-oriented expressions.With exceptions during brief periods,constructions utilizing"Qijian"have remained infrequent;however,it persists as a viable option to fulfill specific expressive needs.
