The effect of N-acy-homoserine lactones mediated quorum-sensing on the adhesion growth and nitrification of nitrifying sludge
Nitrifying bacteria grow slowly and are easily lost in biological wastewater treatment system.N-acy-homoserine lactones (AHLs) signal might be used to enhance the formation of nitrifying biofilm, which contributes to the accumulation of nitrifying bacteria and improves the performance of nitrification. In this study, nitrifying activated sludge has been acclimated in the SBR for 100 days with low C:N ratio (8:1) synthetic wastewater. The influence of 2 μ mol·L-1 AHLs (Cs-HSL or OHHL) on adhesion, ammonia dynamic degradation, and growth rate of nitrifying sludge was investigated. The results indicated that OHHL could strengthen the adhesion growth of nitrifying sludge quickly and maintain effectively in certain period.OHHL could possibly be used to improve formation of nitrifying biofilm.C8-HSL could obviously increase ammonia degradation rate of nitrifying sludge, though it has no positive effect on the sludge adhesion. Both of C8-HSL and OHHL could facilitate nitrifying sludge growth, improve microbial growth rate, enhance microbial activity of nitrifying sludge, and accelerate biomass accumulation.Adding C8-HSL or OHHL could not only achieve good performance of ammonia degradation, but also reduce nitrate concentration in the effluent, which could mitigate the nitrogen pollution of water environment.
