The investigation, assessment, remediation, and verification of remediation of soil odor in a pesticide-contaminated site
Current investigation, risk assessment, remediation and verification of remediation on soil contamination of land for construction in China primarily focus on human health, neglecting the environmental risks posed by soil odor. This study,a defunct organophosphorus pesticide factory was selected as a case, conducts an investigation, assessment, remediation, and verification of remediation of soil odor. The main odoriferous substances in the soil of the site include ethylbenzene,phenol,m-xylene,p-xylene,styrene,toluene,and o-xylene.Based on exposure modeling, the soil odor control value is calculated, and combined with the results of instrumental analysis of soil samples,an initial odor control area of 5635.88 m2 is determined.By integrating the results of olfactory analysis of soil samples, the comprehensive odor control area is determined to be 6885.80 m2.After remediation, both instrumental and olfactory analysis results of the soil meet the control targets, indicating that the odor remediation of the soil is deemed effective. This study establishes a methodological process for the investigation, assessment, remediation and effectiveness evaluation of soil odor in construction land, which can serve as a reference for similar work on other sites.
