Studies on the algicidal properties of an algicidal bacterium Y3-5 and its application
The prevention and control of blue-green algae blooms has always been a highly concerned environmental issue. In this study,a Microcystis aeruginosa algicidal bacterium Y3-5 was isolated from the tail water of an aquaculture pond in Jiaxing,Zhejiang, and was identified as Brevibacillus laterosporus. The algicidal properties of Y3-5 against Microcystis aeruginosa and its algicidal removal effects on algal bloom water bodies were studied. Results showed that the algicidal mode of Y3-5 was mainly by secreting extracellular active substances.Y3-5 presented best algicidal response speed to the algal culture with medium concentration of chlorophyll a(0.25 mg/L),with an algicidal rate of 96.1%±0.88%.The initial cell density increased the algicidal response speed of Y3-5,but had little effect on the final algicidal rate. The optimum pH range of Y3-5 is 7~8 and the algicidal activity is less affected by pH.Y3-5 presented well algicidal performances in each growth period, and had better efficiency in the logarithmic later period and the stable period. The algicidal rate of Y3-5 under the light intensity of 4 000 lux was higher than that under 2 000 lux and dark conditions, reaching 99.8%±0.08%.After adding Y3-5 to the eutrophic water, the algicidal rate reached 86.4%,and the inhibition rate of the dominant algae species, such as Microcystis,Characteria and Fusarium, reached 48.00%,91.07%and 78.41%,respectively.In summary, the algicidal bacterium isolated in this study had high algicidal activity and practical application value, having certain potential in the actual treatment of blue-green algae blooms.
