China is well known for its rich buffalo resources which were mainly used as draft power.In recent years,with the popularization of agricultural mechanization in agricultural areas,the value of draft power of buffalo is less valued and transforming into dairy or dual use of milk and beef.The Xilin buffalo breed is an excellent indigenous breed in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and listed as one of the 13 national local buffalo breeds of China.The advantageous characteristics of Xilin buffalo are a large body size,dual use,meat quality,disease resistance,adaptability,the ability to withstand extreme temperature and humidity,etc.However,the development of Xilin buffalo breeds is currently facing challenges from introduced breeds with performances growing faster,higher meat production,better reproductive performance,and higher milk yield,the survival status of Xilin buffalo is threatened.This article describes the historical evolution,physical appearance,and production performance of Xilin buffalo and proposes corresponding suggestions for the current situations in the development of the Xilin buffalo industry,aiming to provide a reference for the preservation of buffalo genetic resources and the transformation of buffalo industry in China.
