The status and development countermeasures of Barkol horse breeds
The Barkol horse is a local dual-purpose horse breed for both riding and draft,mainly distributed in Barkun Kazakh Autonomous County,Xinjiang.In recent years,the population size has been decreasing year by year due to the decreased market demand and grassland degradation.The article reviewed the distribution and basic facts of the environments of main production areas,history of breed formation,and variety characteristics of Barkol horses,and the scientific research findings and practical utilization of Barkol horses.Moreover,this paper emphasized the necessity of protecting Barkol horses,investigated the reasons for the continuous decline in population size,and proposed protection and utilization countermeasures for providing a reference for the conservation and the development and utilization of Barkol horse breeds.
