Breeding and reproduction of ring-tailed lemurs(Lemur catta)
The ring-tailed lemur is native to Madagascar and not found anywhere else in the wild, distinctively featured with its long black and white striped tail. However, the ring-tailed lemur was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to habitat loss, climate change and being captured which making them the world's most endangered group of primates. The faculties of Tianjin Zoo have accumulated rich experience of feeding and breeding ring-tailed lemurs in the provision of complete ratio, dynamic control of herd density, feeding and management during the reproduction and disease prevention and developed a large population of ring-tailed lemurs. This paper summarized the observations of 71 ring-tailed lemurs in Tianjin Zoo,discussed the technical requirements for the living environment, diet composition, enrichment, and breeding of captive ring-tailed lemurs under the artificial rearing conditions, and explored the fighting behavior among large groups of ring-tailed lemurs during the breeding period, which is intended to provide a reference for the artificial breeding and further research of ring-tailed lemurs in captivity.
