Correlation analysis of body weight and body size traits and growth curve fitting in Ganzhou Muscovy ducks
In order to study the growth and development pattern of Ganzhou Muscovy ducks,60 newborn ducks(half male and half female)were selected.Their body weight was measured at 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 weeks of age after fasting,and body oblique length,semi-diving length,neck length,keel length,shin length,shin circumference,chest depth,chest width and hip bone width were measured at 12 weeks of age.Pearson correlation analysis was performed between body weight and body size of Ganzhou Muscovuy ducks.The Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy models were used to fit the growth curves of Ganzhou Muscovy ducks at 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 weeks of age.The results show that the average body weight of Ganzhou Muscovy ducks at 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 weeks of age was 48.88 g,161.22 g,615.95 g,1 050.42 g,1 665.88 g,2 657.55 g,2 781.82 g,2 863.82 g,3 167.60 g and 3 230.30 g,respectively.The largest coefficient of variation(23.43%)in body weight occurred at 4 weeks of age,while the smallest was observed at 0 weeks(birth weight,9.82%).The coefficient of variation of body weight at other weeks of age was between 11.38%and 21.43%.The average body oblique length,semi-diving length,neck length,keel length,shin length,shin circumference,chest depth,chest width,and hip bone width of Ganzhou Muscovy duck at 12 weeks of age were 23.35 cm,47.96 cm,21.50 cm,15.63 cm,6.90 cm,5.34 cm,10.11 cm,10.52 cm and 5.12 cm,respectively,among which,chest depth had the highest coefficient of variation(13.55%),while semi-diving length,neck length and tibial circumference had relatively smaller variation coefficients ranged from 5.99%to 8.36%.The variation coefficients of other body size traits(body oblique length,keel length,shin length,chest depth,chest width,hip bone width)ranged from 10.36%to 13.55%.The body weight was positively correlated with body oblique length,semi-diving length,neck length,keel length,shin length,shin circumference,chest depth and chest width(P<0.01),but was not significantly correlated with hip bone width(P>0.05).Among them,the highest correlation coefficient was between body weight and semi-diving length,followed by shin length.The remaining traits had correlations with body weight in the following order:neck length,chest width,keel length,chest depth,body oblique length,shin circumference and hip bone width.The growth curve equation fitted by Gompertz model was Y(t)=3 347×exp[-9.50×exp(-0.285×t)],with an inflection point at 7.90 weeks and an inflection weight of 1 231.42 g.The growth curve equation of Ganzhou Muscovy ducks fitted by Von Bertalanffy model was Y(t)=3 228×[1-16.36×exp(-1.415×t)],with an inflection point at 5.51 weeks and an inflection weight of 986.07 g.Both models had R2 values greater than 0.900,with the Gompertz model having a higher R2 than the Von Bertalanffy model.Both models showed S-shaped growth curves for body weight of Ganzhou Muscovy ducks,with a peak weight gain occurring between 4 and 8 weeks,and the weight became stable after 10 weeks.This study indicated that the highest correlation between body weight and body size traits in Muscovy duck was semi-submersion length,and the Gompertz model was better than Von Bertalanffy model to fit the growth curve of Muscovy ducks.
