Qualitative study of caregivers'care needs for patients with advanced cancer pain at different diagnosis and treatment stages
Objective To provide evidence support for caregivers to develop phased oriented health guidance by deeply understanding the diverse care needs of caregivers for late stage cancer pain patients at different stages.Methods A purposive sampling method was used to select caregivers of 14 cancer pain patients from a tertiary grade A hospital in Tianjin as the interview subjects.A de-scriptive qualitative research method was used to longitudinally follow-up the cases on the day of admission,1 day before dis-charge,1-2 weeks after discharge,1 month after discharge,and 3 months after discharge.Content analysis method was used to analyze the data and refine the themes.Results Four themes were extracted.The stage of first-time hospitalization in the pain management department:the need for pain relief and related information;discharge preparation stage:the need for home based cancer pain handling and adverse reaction management;1-2 weeks after discharge:demand for supervision,follow-up,and on-site service of medical staff;1-3 months after discharge:caregiver's physical,mental,and spiritual health needs.Conclusion Caregivers'care needs have diverse characteristics.Medical staff should provide targeted personalized care support for caregivers at different stages of patient diagnosis and treatment,and improve their care quality by meeting their care needs.
