Research on the mediating effect of resourcefulness between fear of cancer recurrence and quality of life among colorectal cancer patients
Objective To employ a structural equation model to examine the mediating effect of resourcefulness between fear of cancer recurrence(FCR)and quality of life among colorectal cancer patients. Methods The research enrolled 372 in-patients who had undergone colorectal cancer surgery from the Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sci-ences.Utilizing a general data questionnaire,Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form,Resourcefulness Scale, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy General, the investigation was conducted. Results The total scores in postopera-tive colorectal cancer patients for FCR,resourcefulness, and quality of life were(35.19±6.48),(74.39±14.26),and(67.22±14.18),respectively,with 59.95%experiencing psychological dysfunction. The level of FCR exhibited negative correlations with resourcefulness and quality of life(r=-0.614,-0.630,both P<0.001),while a positive correlation was noted between resourcefulness and quality of life(r=0.687,P<0.001).Resourcefulness partially mediated the association between FCR and quality of life in postoperative colorectal cancer patients, with a mediation effect value of-0.422,ac-counting for 48.45%of the total effect. Conclusion Fear of cancer recurrence among postoperative colorectal cancer pa-tients is moderate to severe, and both resourcefulness and quality of life are at a moderate level.Resourcefulness plays a par-tial mediating role in the relationship between fear of cancer recurrence and quality of life in colorectal cancer patients. The implementation of resourcefulness training programs by medical staff for individuals experiencing fear of cancer recurrence can help alleviate anxiety and improve quality of life.
