Experimental study on strength characteristics of expanded soil improved by lime-blast furnace slag
Due to the unstable characteristics of expansive soil, such as water absorption and expansion,as well as shrinkage upon water loss,a new type of solidifying agent, blast furnace slag, was used to improve the expan-sive soil in combination with inorganic material lime. The research focused on the free expansion rate, liquid plastic limit, unconfined compressive strength, and shear strength of the improved expansive soil. The study also explored and analyzed the variation of unconfined compressive strength of lime-blast furnace slag(L-BLS)im-proved expansive soil at different curing ages and different dosages of the improvement agent. The results showed that the use of L-BLS to improve the expansive soil significantly increased its early strength. The strength of the improved expansive soil increased with the increase of curing age and dosage of the improvement agent. When 6%lime and 9%blast furnace slag were added, the unconfined compressive strength at the corre-sponding curing age was the highest, and the effective utilization rate of the material was optimal.
