Model test study on failure of finite cohesive backfill behind retaining wall under translational mode
Based on the model test of transparent soil and the image analysis of PIVlab, the deformation charac-teristics and failure rules of soil behind the retaining wall under the translational mode are studied by taking the finite cohesive fill between the back of the retaining wall and adjacent buildings as the research object. The re-sults show that in the process of the retaining wall moving away from the backfill, the shear sliding surface gradually forms and produces secondary sliding, and finally evolves into a quadratic curved sliding surface run-ning from the wall heel to the fill surface, with an angle of 57° to the horizontal, and the limit between finite and semi-infinite fill is b/h=0.7.The failure mode of the backfill under the finite width is different from that under the semi-infinite condition. The sliding surface has an intersection point on the wall of the adjacent buid-ing,with an angle of about 55° to the horizontal, and there is no multiple reflection like sand.
