Effect of Environmental Orientation on Firms'Environmental Innovation Practices—The Moderation of Strategic Flexibility
In the process of China's economic transformation, firms'environmental innovation practices have become a focal topic in solving the dilemma of institution and efficiency, and promoting the realization of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. This paper differentiates two types of environment orientation:internal and external environmental orientation. We explore the impact of internal and external environment orientation on environmental innovation practices and the different moderating effects of two types of strategic flexibility(resource flexibility and coordination flexibility)on the above relationship, thus guiding firms to use strategic flexibility to achieve a high degree of matching with internal and external environment orientation, and improve the environmental innovation practices.Based on the samples of 214 manufacturing firms in the Yangtze River Delta, the results show that both internal and external environment orientation have positive impacts on the environmental innovation practices of firms through different mechanisms.Specifically, resource flexibility only positively and significantly moderates the relationship between internal environment orientation and environmental innovation practices, while coordination flexibility only positively and significantly moderates the relationship between external environment orientation and environmental innovation practices. The research conclusions provide a theoretical explanation and reference for firms to effectively apply internal and external environment orientation and to promote their pursuit of environmental innovation.
